Tomorrow will be my 6 month blogiversary! I cannot believe how quickly it’s gone by but it has been so much fun! If you have read my ‘Meet the Blogger‘ page you will know how I came into my makeup obsession and started my blog.
As I am 6 months in I thought I would share 6 things I have learnt so far.
1) Do your research
I would definitely recommend doing some research before deciding on what platform to put your blog on. The major ones being Blogger and WordPress. Depending on how much you want to be able to manipulate on your blog you may have a preference. Also it’s worth looking into if you want your own domain name how easy implementation and costs are with either WordPress or Blogger.
2) Buying too much
I am quite guilty of this one myself. As a blogger I thought I had to buy whatever has just come out review it and then found I had a huge stack of makeup and nowhere to store it all. Yes it’s nice to buy and review to let your readers know what is out there but do not do it at the full expense of your bank account. Pick and choose what to review and find products you would genuinely be interested in buying.
3) It’s not always positive
It would be great if everything was rainbows and smiles but sometimes you just won’t agree with a product. First there is no point in lieing about your opinion. A blog is known for people’s opinions and no one expects any less. However I would avoid completely trashing a product because as they say ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’. It may not work for you but it may be someone else’s holy grail. Talk to your readers about why you don’t like it and if there are elements you do like add them in!
Another one I am guilty off is a ‘lack’ of scheduling. I rarely prepare my blog posts in advance. I wish I could be more organised but to be honest it is hard when you work full time and now adding my studies to it. Try to do a couple of posts at a time so you can give yourself a breather. A friend (also a blogger) gave me a great tip about photographing loads of products when you get good day light so all that’s left is to write the post which I find much easier.
Let your readers know how often you plan to post and when. If you can’t commit to a daily post then set yourself a realistic goal like every 3 days (like my own) or once a week. If that schedule changes let your readers know! I have specific bloggers who’s schedules I know off my heart and come back on those days for them. However saying that, we all have lives outside of blogging. Things come up and we can’t always commit to what we would like. Don’t panic if you get caught in this, you are human and your readers should understand that.
6) Other Blogs
I completely understand when you start getting into a blog, you are so busy writing for your own you start to forget to read other people’s. It’s all great when people start following you and reading your blog posts but it’s a 2 way street, Take some time (on your morning train commute perhaps) to check out other bloggers websites. Bloglovin is a great way to add all your favourite blogs into one feed and even find some new ones. We are all in the same boat here.
And that’s all!
Any of you guys coming up to a Blogiversary? I hope you are enjoying blogging as much as I am and if you have any more observations other than the above I would love if you commented them below.
Until next time…
